Artist Statement:
Carolyn Zick This series of drawings: RADIOLARIA was created in the past month (June 2005) while I was an artist in residence and also Seminar Director for the Master of Fine Art program at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
Radiolaria are microscopic plankton that have an incredible form and were a wonderful subject to draw. I discovered reproductions of them on the Internet and took the small photos as the basis for this current body of work. This drawing series is an interlude from a body of work I have been in process with during the past year (and will show at Shift Gallery in Seattle, Washington this September). It was a refreshing chance to engage in strictly black and white studies while concentrating on the amazing similarities yet stunning diversity of these small sea creatures.
